Robyn, as you will enter by your car, you should contact a local travel agency to get an approval from relevant Chinese authorities. Only after that can you apply for the tourist type entry permit. I suggest you entrust the whole affair to the travel agency to facilitate the process. Otherwise, you may not have enough time to get it.
