Independent backpackers in Tibet

Hello,

I read on the internet that it is possible to visit the areas of Amdo and Kham China .
I found an itinerary of 14 days on the land of snows. They find it possible to do it independently without guides? We are a European couple.

Thank you very much

Ana

The two places you mentioned refer to large areas which traverse many provinces like Tibet, Gansu, Yunnan, Qinghai and Sichuan. If you want to enter Tibet, you must apply for the travel permit and it is necessary to join a tour (so tour guide is needed). If you go to the parts in other provinces , you can have your independent travel without these.

You do not need to have a permit when going to Amdo and Kham regions and Amdo and Kham is not a part of TAR, Tibetan Autonomous Region.

Amdo and Kham regions are some of the best places to observe traditional Tibetan culture because it is not packed with tourists, and here you also see snow-capped peaks, great trekking routes, lots of nomadic culture, over a thousand monasteries, stunning grasslands.

I hope this could help you.
