Converting work visa to dependent type

I am DG and I have been working for an International Company in Beijing since Feb-2014. My contract with the company expires in March 2017. I need to renew my current Z type in Mar-2016 (visa is renewed by the company every year). I came to Beijing as my husbands dependent and when I got the job I went back to my home country and applied for a Z type at the Chinese consulate. My dependent type was cancelled and I received the Z type.

Can I convert my work type to a dependent one if I take a break from working? Will I need to exit the country to change the type from work type to dependent one? What is the procedure to be followed to obtain the dependent one?

DG, you can possibly convert the work type to dependent type at the local Exit & Entry Magagement Bureau under PSB. First, you should cancel your work permit. Then, you can go to the bureau office and submit your passport, application form, recent photo, your husband's passport copy and residence permit copy, along with an invitation letter from him. Then after you convert the work type into the dependent type, you should renew your residence permit at the site.

You CAN change your Z (working) to an L (dependent) in country. The only one that you must leave the country for is a working type. Unfortunately the time of a dependent one varies- they might give you a regular type L type which I believe has a max of 90 days and then you must exit. Something like that (when they put in the new regs for regular L dependent ones I didn't need them since I qualified for long term dependent)...but you should check with the local PSB to make sure as they are NOT all the same.

I know the new regulations now allow long term dependent (L) entry permits/ residence permits as I got a 2 year last year. BUT I'm not sure if it was because my husband is a Chinese National...if you're husband is renewing his work type then you should be able to apply for a dependent at the same time but his company will have to include you on the paperwork. This way you can get renewed for the exact same time period as your husband - which is how we get my daughter's entry permits with my contract when I'm working.
