How do we get our marriage certificate authorised?

My husband and I are applying to work as English teachers in China, we have heard that we need to have our marriage certificate authorised before we go. Does anyone know how we go about this? We are both British and currently in the UK, we have been married for almost 35 years.

Deborah, will both of you work in China? If so, I don't think you need to have your marriage certificate authenticated. Anyway, if you want to be prepared in case that the authenticated certificate is needed, you should first have the marriage certificate notarized by the UK Foreign Affairs Ministry or its authorised agencies, then take the notarized document to the Chinese embassy or consulate for authentication.
