Single Woman artist and Photographer to Yunnan

I am an artist who is keenly interested in traditional cultures and architecture. Yunnan sounds like an excellent place to meet some of China's many ethnic groups. After visiting a cousin in Hangzhou, I'd like to spend 4-5 days in Yunnan. Which are the recommended places in Yunnan to visit? What is the recommended mode of transport for a single woman to get to these different villages? Is it affordable to have a car and driver? Would a flight be a recommended way to get from Hangzhou to Yunnan? I've lived and traveled to many countries, including India; I have taken Indian buses, trains, etc. 2nd class.

1. Oh, there are many popular scenic areas for you to choose, including Stone Forest, Dianchi Lake, Golden Temple and Western Hills in Kunming, Lijiang Old Town, Lugu Lake and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang, Dali Ancient City, Erhai Lake and Mt. Cangshan in Dali.

2. Hiring a car is a good transportation, but the cities are a little far between. It may cost you a lot. If it is ok with you, use the long-distance buses.

3. Yes, flight is a good way to go. Direct flights from Hangzhou to Kunming, Dali and Shangri-la are all available.

Thank you for your quick response. I've heard that places such as old Dali and Lijiang are pretty, but have become a bit overrun with tourists. They would make a good base though. For a more authentic experience, are t here some smaller villages you would recommend seeing? Are they served by buses?

Yes, near Dali, you can go to Shuanglang Village, that is one of the most beautiful villages there. As i know, in the east side of the old Town, at the Dali Highway, you can take the bus to the village directly. Or you can go to Xiaguan North Bus Station, where you can also take the bus to Shuanglang. The bus ride is about 1 hour. The scenery there is amazing and there are less people. Hope you enjoy it.
