Hey, The theme of Mid-Autumn Festival is reunion. The moon is round. The moon cakes are round. And the lanterns are round too. Here "round", in Chinese, Yuan is the symbol of Reunion.35

The lantern is urbanly use for lighting the path/way is for our journey to reunite us with our family in one place.otherwise,the lantern is use for keep us away from the devil or a bad matter that will approach us .on the night of 15th to 16th13

People is not showing-off their lanterns it is because they wanted to respect the legend. I know that because I myself respect to legend so I don't know about the others.10
