About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

India - Beijing - UK

Hello,
I am a UK citizen currently in India and I would like to visit a friend in Beijing on the way home. Will this be possible under this 72hr permit? I wanted to double check because my 2 flights will be booked separately, with different airlines and Beijing is not geographically on my way home at all.

Thank you for your reply and help.
So please tell me if this is correct, as most flights from Delhi to Beijing are indirect.
If I fly Delhi - (stop Shanghai) - Beijing - London I cannot have a 72 hour transit in Beijing
If I fly Delhi - (stop Hong Kong) - Beijing - London I can have a 72 hour transit in Beijing
Is this correct?
