what is best way to go from kunming to xining (qinghai) by train?

If your map is current it looks like I have to go a bit east, perhaps to Xian first, then west to Xining? Does that sound right?

This is no direct train between these two places. You can make a transfer in Xian as mentioned. For reference, other good transfer cities inlude Chengdu and Lanzhou.
