i have forgotten to get a visaare travelling on monday overseas

Can I obtain at Shanghai airport if I have a letter from the business I am coming to PRC to visit? Or is there another quick tourist type I could get upon arrival?

Sorry, I am afraid that you can not get the entry permit when you arrive. You are required to apply for L type before you go. My suggestion is that you may book a flight from Shanghai to HK within 72 hours after your flight (Australia to Shanghai). In this way, you can make use of 72 hours free transit in Shanghai. When you arrive in HK, you can try to apply for the L type if you still plan to visit other places in mainland.
