About:Chinese Consulate in Edinburgh

When applying for a Chinese Tourist Visa do you have to leave your passport with the consulate?

I am a U.S. citizen living in U.K. so I kind of need my passport with me most of the time...

Yes, you have to leave your passport at the consulate during the application processing period. If you are in an emergency and need to use the passport, you can apply for the rush service, which only takes two working days. After the processing, you can get your passport back.
