About:How to Apply for a China Visa

do I need a letter of invitation for my trip?

I am a US citizen planing to visit mainland China, HK and Macau on my own.

You needn't apply for HK and Macau. For mainland, you can apply for a L type with round-trip air tickets and hotel reservation. Invitation letter is not required.
