What turns burial jade black?

Dear Susie,
I was given a piece of black buried jade by my deceased father. His father had given it to him. My father told me it is around 2000 years old but I don't know what elements in the growing turned it black. Is it iron?
How can I get an appraisal?
Thank you.

Rollyne, it says that black jade wasn't black at the beginning. It was green at the beginning. Because it was exposed to cosmic rays for millions of years, then it turns black.

Some other people say that it becomes black because it contains an element that resembles black lead.
