About:China Transit Visa

double entry into shanghai

I am a US citizen and I will be flying into Shanghai in June and staying for 48 hours before flying to Thailand for 2 weeks. However, I will be flying from Thailand back to Shanghai and have 12 hours before I leave to fly home to the US. Is the first 48 hours covered by the 72-hour visa free? and on the second entry coming home, am i okay to leave the airport for a few hours before i fly home the US? Or do i need a special entry permit? thanks!

Nate, you are qualified for the 72-hour free transit service on both ways. On your second entry, if you apply for the free transit service, you can leave the airport without any special entry permit.

thank you for your response. Can the free transit service be done in Shanghai or do I need to do this before leaving?

You just need to tell the airline staff before the flight arrives. After your arrivival, apply for the service at the airport.
