50,000 yuan requirement for all Chinese citizens flying internationally

I have a Chinese friend who wants to visit me in the U.S.. My friend tells me they must have 50,000 yuan to board their flight. She tells me all citizens of China must show this money but they do not have to hand the money over to officials as a deposit to guarantee their return. Instead, she retains the money on her person and brings the money with her to the U.S..
Is this true or am I being misinformed? She does not have all the money so I would have to send her about half of it and I don't want to be frauded out of the money!

Oh, I’m sure that you are misinformed by your friend. As I know, the customs fixed that Chinese citizens can take no more than 20,000CNY cash when going abroad. There is no such rule that one must take at least 50,000CNY to go.

Is there any reference online to this urban legend. I've received this same feedback from Chinese nationals.
