About:Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

International transfer to Australia via layover in Guangzhou

Do I need to pick up my checked -in luggage and re-check in during the transfer layover? Do I have to go through customs with my bags? I have an int'l boarding pass to Australia in which I am only do layover for 5 hrs with China Southern.

No, it is no need to pick-up and recheck in lugagges for international transfers. Your luggage will be automatically transfered to the next flight for your destination. And the transit procure is as follows:
flight arrival - inspection & quarantine - transfer procedure - waiting and boarding

Well, it means that you need to go to help desk or under the direct by sign to find your transfer counter. Then the staff at the counter can help you finish the transfer procedures.
After that, you can catch the next flight to Australia.
