Your BF has a chance to get the L type. He has to submit his passport, finished 2013 version application form, a recent passport photo, round-trip air tickets and hotel booking in PRC. Perhaps, a financial proof is required, such as a recent six months bank statement.

If you were married, he will possibly apply for a S type to live in China. However, if he wants to work there, he still needs to change the S type into Z type. After he lives in PRC for some time, he can try first find a job and then try to get the Z type at the local exit and entry administration bureau. However, whether he can get it is not assured.
