You don't need to apply for a visa because you can HK ID Card Holder. But you need to have Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents. Then you can enter into mainland China.

According to the regulation, you can easily get a visa on arrival at the border to visit the island. However, sometimes the customs may also refuse some entries. To ensure your trip there, it would be best to apply for a China visa in HK in advance.
