Is it mandatory to book return ticket for S2 visa?

My mother got her S2 type for a duration stay of 90 days. As we are planning to get her S2 renewed in Shanghai for extra 1 more month her date of return is unknown for now. But I am wondering if it is mandatory to book return ticket now it self?
