About:China Visa Exemption

Do i need to get a double entry visa or can I get 24 hour Direct Transit for the second leg?

I am travelling to China in June - Beijing -> Shanghai and then onwards to Hong Kong. From HK I am planning to get the train to Hanoi via Guangzhou and Nanning (total journey time in China less than 24 hours).

Yes, your second leg is qualified for 24 hours free transit. However, you need to have the train tickets from HK to Guangzhou, Guangzhou to Nanjing and Nanjing to Hanoi in hands before you go to GZ from HK. Are you sure that you can do this? Therefore, I would suggest you apply for a double entry one, to play it safe.
