Do we need visa if we do not enter when the cruise end in Shanghai?

We are taking a cruise In Sept 2015 that will end in Shanghai, but we will leave the ship in Japan. We will not be in at all. I heard that if one is in Shanghai or Beijing 1 or 2 days we don't need one. If we do can the fee be waive? WE have one that expired in Jan 2015, can it be extended?

If you just transit in Shanghai less than 24 hours, you won't need apply any type in advance. If it is longer than 24 hours, you should apply for a transit type in advance. Since the one you already have on your passport is already expired, you can't extend it. Instead, you should apply for a new one.
