If you just visit Shenzhen, I think you needn't apply one in advance. When you reach HK, you can apply for a five day special VOA at the border. It costs around CNY168. If you plan to visit other Chinese cities, you should apply for a L type from CVASC branch in Sydney. It requires your passport, finished application form affixed with a recent passport photo, return air ticket and hotel booking in Shenzhen.
