I was told that An Invitation Letter from Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a must for Sri Lankan Passport holders.

Generally speaking, it is not necessarily required, but for certain types of entry permit, the invitation letter from Foreign Affairs Ministry or its authorized units are required.
