About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

I need to travel by ferry Hong Kong to mainland for a 6 hour conference. Is there a special visa?

Rudi, which city will you enter and stay? If it's Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou, or Xiamen, you can get a VOA there. If not, I'm afraid you have to apply for an M type entry permit in advance.
