I was thinking about get a flight to Lanzhou and then take a train, is it the best option? Is it easy to buy train tickets when we arrived in Lanzhou or is better to book in advance?

It costs least by the direct train between and it takes 20-24h. To save time, you can take a flight to Lanzhou first. Then transfer to a train to ZY. There are many trains in operation everyday. You can buy the tickets upon your arrival and don’t need to book it in advance.
