Working in china under a tourist visa

Hi, I have been given a job contract for a very big and seemingly reputable school in Shanghai. Because of Shanghai's strict z type requirements. (I am recent graduate student with out 2 years of formal teaching experience), I am told that I will be working on a tourist type. I understand that a lot of teachers do this. How risky is this? What happens if I am caught working under a tourist type? Is it as simple as a fine, or can i loose my job, jail time, or be deported? Also, I notice that tourist type gives you only 1 month access. My school is saying however that I will be able to renew it every 3 months and ill be okay. How is this possible? Thank you for your help.

Benjamin, seriously speaking, it’s illegal to work in China with the L type. If you are caught, your L type will be immediately cancelled and you will be sent back. You shall be fined not less than RMB 5,000 but not more than RMB 20,000 yuan; where circumstances are serious, you shall be detained for not less than five days but not more than fifteen days and shall also be fined. What’s more, your subsequent application for China entry permit is likely to be rejected. So I don’t think it’s wise to do so.

In addition, it is right that you can extend the L type before it expires. But if you extend it for too many times, the officer will certainly suspect your intention and you will draw their attention. Therefore, you'd better not take the risk.
