Can I use 72 hr visa for a RT ticket to Beijing + 2nd RT ticket to non-China city? Stopover allowed?

If I have one round trip ticket from ORD-PEK, can I buy a 2nd r/t ticket from PEK to non-Chinese city and use the 72 hour free transit?

What if I do PEK-PVG-Japan r/t, with an overnight stopover at PVG to see friends?

Scott, you can only transit in Beijing if you want to make use of 72 hours free transit. It means that you can not arrange an overynight stay in Shanghai.
