Well, if you have ever been to mainland China, by showing your passport with proof that you have been issued Chinese visa before by embassies and consulates, it would be easily for you to get a visa on arrival. Otherwise it is suggested to apply for an visa in advance in your country.

You are easier to gey the visa than your friends because of you have ever been to mainland China. So you can apply for it when you arrival. But for your friends, they are suggested to apply for the visa in your country in advance.
