About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Direct Transit Policy: Claim Luggage

We have US and French passports, and we have a 12-hour stopover in Shanghai. Applying the Direct Transit Policy, 1) would we be able to leave and re-enter the airport without any form/application? 2) since the airline would take care of our luggage to the final destination, could we just leave the airport without claiming our luggage except for our carry-on? Thank you.

Elisa, there is no problem that you can exit the airport without any entry permit. In my view, your checked luggage needn't be taken because it will be secured to reach the final destination. However, I think you need to take your carry-on luggage with you. Or you may choose to deposit at the airport. Anyway, you can confirm this with your airlines.
