Travelling during Passport renewal process

If I am getting my British passport renewed while living in China, is it possible to travel domestically in China using my original passport since I do not live near any of the Visa Application centres?

I have been informed by the Embassy that my original passport will be returned back to me for ID purposes, but will it be ok to travel using this (as they may snip the edge since it is a soon to invalid passport)?

Ronald, I think as long as your original passport keeps valid, you can use it to travel domestically in China.
