Working on a residence permit

Hi I am a British student living in China. I originally recieved the x1 visa I believe but then switched to the residence permit, which i think renders the x1 void? At the end of my studies I have an internship here so what I am asking, is can work whilst on the residence permit (temporary, not permanent) or do i have to apply for a Z type? Thank you.

Tyler, if you want to work in China, you have to apply for a Z type, and then get a new residence permit with the Z type. Otherwise, it is illegal for you to work in China. You can try to change your current X type into Z type at China. If it can't be done, you should go back to your country and apply for the Z type.
