About:China Family Reunion Visa

I will complete my research in the US this May and need to apply for a new Visa.

I am married to a Chinese national residing in China and I am a US citizen. I was married in mainland and obtained the Chinese wedding book in Changchun, during that time I lived with my wife and her parents in her home city. However, in May I wish to return to the mainland to be with my wife so we can start a family, buy a house, etc, with her in her hometown to live there and to live close to all her family. I need to apply for a new type, but what type I should apply for?

I believe I should apply for a Q1 but I also read about a temporary resident permit and was not sure which one I should apply for. Eventually after we have been married for 5 years I want to apply for permanent resident status. Should a Q1 be the type I apply for? If so what all do I need to submit along with the application? Chinese wedding book? Her Chinese ID, my passport, letter of invitation, resident where we will live until we get our own home, etc?

Keith, the temporary resident permit can only be obtained after you enter China with the Q1 type, so you should get the Q1 type first. In addition to the application form, you should also submit your passport, a photocopy of the passport, a recently taken color bare-headed photo, an invitation letter from your wife, a photocopy of your wife’s ID card, and the original and photocopy of your wedding book. However, you should be aware that you can’t work in China with the Q1 type. If you want to work there, you should get a Z type in advance or change the Q1 type into Z type after arrival at China.

Thanks so much for the response. The Q1 and Z types, how long are the duration of each stay? Are both over 180 days and do both of them require the same documentation or is there a difference in what is needed. Thank you in advance.

If you got a Q1 and turn it into a Resident Permit in China for a 1 year or 2 year one you don't have to exit until it is finished, no 90 days or anything like that, the Resident Permit will also be Multi Entry and renewable. Doc's for a Q1 is an invitation letter from your Chinese wife, a registered address and medical checkup might be required. But the main document is the marriage contract or marriage book (Red Book, if married within China). If you want a Z type, 1. Medical Checkup, 2. Invitation letter from a company, 3. Your 4 year Degree or better, no copies, the real one, after you have all of this done the company should handle the rest.
