If you plan to work in China, you should find a job first. Your employer must be qualified for recruiting foreigners. This is very important. If it isn't a qualified company, you can't get the work permit. Then you can't apply for the Z type.
After you get the work permit, you need to make an appointment with Chinese embassy. Then you need to submit your application on the appointed date. The required documents are:
1. passort with a validity of six months and two blank pages at least
2. application form affixed with a recent passport photo
3. your work permit
4. a copy of your passport information page
