We are living in Australia (on aust passports) and will be joinig a group tour from Malaysia to china for 6 nights.

Well, if you plan to visit some other places rather than follow the group tour, I think you'd better apply for the individual L type on your own. Except for your passport, application form and a recent passport photo, you just need provide your return flight ticket and hotel booking.
