About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Is it possible to obtain double entry visa for a single entry trip just to obtain a 6 months one?

Paul, I am afraid not. The consular officer issues it according to your travel itinerary. If you just go for a single trip, you will usually just get a single entry one.
