letter of invitation required for a tourist visa.

Question

Where can I get a letter of invitation as I don't know anyone in China, I have return flight details and booked hotel accommodation but the Chinese Embassy are insisting on a letter of invitation to process my tourist entry permit. Any advice on where and how much it will cost to obtain a letter. The Embassy advised me to contact the hotel for a letter but they just keep sending me my booking and not the required letter.
