Deacon, yes, you need to apply for a tourist L type. Documents needed are as follows: a valid passport, a photocopy of the passport, a completely filled application form affixed with your recent photo taken within six months, and round-trip ticket and hotel reservations. If you know someone in China, you can ask him or her to write you an invitation letter, so that the ticket and hotel booking may not be required.
