About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Total confusion about what I will need to do next

I have been traveling to China for the past two years on Business visa as my university colleagues and I worked to set up a program, which I will lead. The program is now set. The University where I will work has been handling the next steps in getting a work Z type and residency permit. They seem quite unfamiliar with the process. They gave me some forms, the first of which was used for me to procure a single entry Z type here in the US through the Chinese Consulate. I now have another paper, which I understand I need to bring to the local authorities when I next enter China. What will happen. I plan to be in China for only 16 days. I have had a physical, etc. a few months ago on a previous visit.

Pete, I think you don't need to apply for the Z type as you are only in China for 16 days. It's somehow troublesome to get the Z type. As for your case, a M type is OK. You can apply for it with your passport, a photocopy of the passport, the application form, recently taken color bare-headed photo, and an invitation letter from your program partner in China.
