About:Visa Policy of China

I am from Canada and hold a Canadian passport

do I need to get a Chinese visa if I am going to Shanghai for business for 3 days?

You need one in principle. However, if you can fly from Canada to Shanghai, taking your activities there, and then fly from Shanghai to a place other than part of mainland China or Canada, i.e., maybe Hong Kong and Macau, and then go back to Canada, you will be eligible for the 72 hour free transit. In this case, u don't need the entry permit.
