Single Entry Visa - need to leave China and return

What happens in cases where a person holding a single entry one needs to return to their home country for a court matter? Can they be given permission to do this - there is no choice in the matter and they must give evidence. Can they return and continue on the single one given the reason for leaving is a legal one?

E, you can return to your country. However, you need to apply a new one if you want to get back to China.
