About:China City Guide

US > Beijing (2days) > Hong Kong (5days) > US itinerary

We fly from US to Beijing for 2 days, then fly to Hong Kong, stay for 5 days then back to US. Does this qualify for the 72-hour free transit?

Yes, your case is suitable for the 72h visa free transit. Just apply for a transit permit in Beijing Airport after landing to have fun for two days.
