Routing quest from the US to Shanghai. does this qualify for 72 hr, TWOV?

Our routing has changed. If we fly from NY to Hong Kong, then on to Shanghai (just connect in Hong Kong), spend 72 hrs in Shanghai, then fly to Toronto, Canada, then to NY. We called Cathay Pacific and they said it qualifies. Please confirm. Thank you.
