Yes, if you register your marriage in China, you need to provide a notarized marriage status certificate.

Hello Heather, do you know if there is a special form for this or can I just state that I am a single person and then get it notarized by a JP?

Regards
Clive

I'm not sure whether there is a special form for it, but if you are in China now, you should go the Australian embassy or consulate to issue you the single status certificate. If you are in Australia, the single status certificate should be issued by the local government and notarized by a JP, then authenticated by Chinese embasy or consulate there.
