Can British citizens still obtain a Chinese Z visa in Hong Kong?

I have been offered several jb placements while being here in China. I am a British citizen and currently on a student (X2) type.

One company is offering me a Z type for China but is stating I shall have to return to England. The other company is offering the same Chinese Z type (working visa) but insisting that British nationals can still obtain a Z one when applying in Hong Kong with all the right documentation such as invites from the company, completed work permit application forms etc.

According to the authorities, the applicants who apply in HK must provide their valid HK status. However, some agencies there are capable of handdling your Z type application. Undoubtedly, you need to pay them very expensive service charge. So the safest way is to apply from CVASC branches in the UK.
