Applying for X1 visa within China

Hi,
I'm supposed to be going to China for year long study as part of a degree program in a Dutch university. There was a delay on the part of the Chinese university and I have not received my acceptance letter and JW201/202. As my flight is already booked and approaching I'm wondering if it's possible to apply for a tourist type, enter China and, assuming I obtain the necessary documents from the Chinese university, apply for my X1 type from within China. Is this a possibility?

Paul, it's hard to tell. Some people said that they changed L into X successfully without leaving mainland China. However, many other people claim that it's impossible to change visa types in mainland China. I personally suggest that you may ask your unversity whether they can help you change your L type into X1 type. If they can't, then I am afraid that you need to go back to your country to apply for the X1 type.

There is very little possibility that you can change the L type into X1 type within China. I suggest you first come to CN. After you have got all the required documents, you can go to nearby countries or Hong Kong to apply for the X1 type, or you can explain your situation to the embassy in Dutch and ask for a best solution.
