Traveling by train from Hong Kong to Macau, but passing thru mainland China

Hello,
I'm a US citizen and will be traveling by train from Hong Kong to Macau. The train will be passing thru mainland China. Does this qualify as direct transit and so I will not need to apply for a visa? Or does the free transit policy only apply to travel thru airports?
Thanks!

It qualifies as a direct transit, so you do not need one. BTW, 24 hour free transit is available in all ports, while 72 hour free transit is only available in eligible airports.
