About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

Do I need a visa and if so can I obtain same in Bangkok?

Australian citizen traveling from Hong Kong post cruise to Shanghai to meet another cruise. 8 days between cruises, maybe traveling by train, in mainland china for 5 days.

Yes, a L type one is needed. You can apply for it in Bangkok but it's difficult to say that you will get it successfully. The consulate/embassy officers have the final say on whether to give it or not.
