How to get to Shantou from Hong Kong?

I'm from USA looking to go to Shantou from HK but I have no idea where to start. What's the best route there opposed to airplane. I have heard there might be a bullet train involved. If so, I would like to experience that but i can't seem to get a confirmation on the bullet train from HK. Help!

You can take rail from Guangzhou East and then transfer to Guangzhou South statino and take the high speed train to Chaoshan and then take bus to Shantou. Or you can choose to go from Hong Kong to Shenzhen by the metro, and then transfer to Shenzhen north station and go to chaoshan by rail.

You need to take your passport, China visa and HK visa(if you need one). The Customs would check them when go through the Pass.

Do you mean the shenzhen or guangzhou option mentioned above? For HK to GZ about 2 hours. GZ to shantou about 3 to 4 hours. For HK to shenzhen about 1 hour and shenzhen to chaoshan about 3 hours. This time do not includ the transfer between different stations.
