do i need a personal letter from my boyfriend whom i will be visiting?

Hi.  My boyfriend works for Boeing and is on assignment to Beijing for 3 months.  I plan to visit him for 2 weeks in February.  Do I still need him to write a personal letter stating I am visiting? 6 months of bank statements still necessary?

Yes, an invitation letter from him, the copy of his passport and visa will help you get a tourist visa. Of course, you also need to prepare other required documents like visa application form and photo. If you are a US passsport holder, no need to prepare the bank statement of 6 months.
