Transit visas for cruise ships

My husband and I will be on a cruise ship. We will be docking on March 18th at 9:00a.m. and departing on the 19th at 5:00p.m. Can we use a transit type for Shanghai, China while on a crusie ship or do we need another kind. If one is needed which one do we need and what is the cost. My husband is 74 and I am 65. Thank you,
