Custom of giving red packet money during CNY

My husband and I will be visiting and staying with a Chinese family in Hebei from 14 Feb to 24 Feb 2015. We wil be observing their preparation as well as celebration of CNY. Will we be expected to give red packet (with money) to people we visit during CNY? If so, what is the standard amount? And do we give only to unmarried children only? Do we give to elderly people like grandmas (so as to ward off bad luck)?

I've been to Vietnam during Lunar New Year 2014. There only the older poeple gave some Lucky Money to the younger ones and to unmarried women. We also got some from our host. So I would recommend you to prepare some. We got 10.000 Dong each, which is about 0,50 Euro. It does not depend on how much you give, but that you give some at all I think :)

Helene, it depends on local customs. Normally, red pacets or envelopes are given to the younger generation, mainly children. In some areas, those young adults who haven't been married still receive red envelopes. The amount is diffrerent from place to place. In rural areas, CNY 50 or 100 is ok. However, CNY 500, 1000 or more are distributed. Is your husband a Chinese local in Hebei? If so, he should know how much money should be put in the packets.

And it's normal that adults give red envelopes to their parents or grandparents. I give red envelopes to my parents every year. When my grandpa was alive, I also gave red envelopes to him. It's not used to ward off bad luck. I work in a city which is a bit far from my hometown. So my parents need to take care of themselves. The money is for daily expenses though it isn't a large great deal.
